12 Random Facts about Myself, All Related to My Experiences with Videogames

October 29, 2008

I was tagged again by a friend to play the same game that I’ve played before, and at this point I think it’s rather futile to say that I’m not into tags because I do them anyway. So maybe I don’t do them all the time, but it’s nice to do one of these every once in a while to break the monotony.

Like always, this is about ten things I want the world to know about me.

1. I loved writing all the entries about the first four games I bought for my PlayStation. I loved those so much that I wanted to make this week the videogame week, where everything I blog will be videogame-related. I’m doing a bad job so far, since I didn’t post anything new yesterday. But sure, why not skew all the 10 random facts to videogames, noh?

2. First, I shall tell you about the consoles that I own or used to own. I have NES, SNES, Game Gear, PS, PS2, Nintendo DS and Xbox360.

3. Know Mario Paint? It’s a “game” for SNES. I put the game in quotation marks because it’s not so much a game as it is an application similar to what I can find in a computer. Specifically, Mario Paint is pretty much Microsoft Paint, and I draw in it using the SNES mouse. Now that app isn’t good, but also included in the same cartridge is the Mario Paint Composer, and it lets me compose songs using 16-bits bleeps. How does it work? On an empty music sheet, I place icons, each of which has a distinct sound. It’s that simple, but it has a huge following, and I happen to love watching the youtube videos of its enthusiasts playing its renditions of popular songs.

My personal picks:

Take On Me

Thriller

And are you tired of being Rickroll’d? Why not instead get PAINTROLL’D!

Even the Megaman 3 songs are not spared of the Mario Paint treatment! Not that I’m complaining, of course. Renditions of my two favorite MM3 songs:

Spark Man

Snake Man

4. Since we’re talking about music anyway, I shall also reveal that I pay great attention to videogame music - they’re ancillary, sure, but they’re a huge factor of what makes a game memorable to me. I like the songs of select titles so much I’ve bought and downloaded their albums.

5. The first game that I’ve finished is Super Mario Brothers.

6. I’ve only finished Megaman 2 the first time a week ago, and that’s after I’ve finished Megaman and Megaman 3 many years ago. Of the three I regard Megaman 2 to be the best. It also might be the best Megaman game there is. I prefer the music of Megaman 3 though.

7. I’m incredibly pissed about Windows XP not being able to run Grim Fandango properly.

8. I think Final Fantasy VII is the most overrated videogame of all time. Sure, it says something that I’ve played it to the end, and I do like it, but I’ve never understood why it’s regarded so highly. I didn’t care for the characters, felt nothing about the Aeris’ death (besides the pity that I had lost a healer in my party), found the Materia system to be mere rehashes of FFVI’s Espers, did not feel that Sephiroth was a convincing villain, and thought that the story fell short (what were the Ancients and the Promised Land again, exactly?). I find it really annoying how Square-Enix keeps milking this particular game to death. And if Aeris is really dead, why does she keep appearing Final Fantasy 7 spinoffs as she had in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and in Final Fantasy Tactics?

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I’ve said “dead” a bit too often on my 8th point, because I want Final Fantasy VII to rest already. Move on, people!

9. All of number 8 said, I still like Final Fantasy VII more than Final Fantasy VIII. Squall and Rinoa are the least likable couple I’ve seen in any works of fiction. In fact the only Final Fantasy couple that I’ve rooted for is Tidus and Yuna of Final Fantasy X, bad fashion be damned.

10. Games I’m looking forward to playing: Fallout 3, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Tales of Vesperia, and Dead Space.

I used to own/currently own alot of consoles myself. Had an Atari, NES, Gameboy, Gameboy color, SEGA genesis (or was it Megadrive? I dont remember anymore!), Playstation, PS3, PSP and Nintendo DS.

FALLOUT 3 FTW!!!! I’m getting my copy this week, hopefully *crosses fingers* That along with Little Big Planet :D

Final Fantasy 8. I always wondered what all the hullabaloo was about. It wasn’t a great game, the story was mediocre, it’s battle/weapon system was blah…then I realized that people loved it because of its love story which didn’t leave me feeling “kilig” in any way, shape or form. And Squall’s emo attitude pissed me off. Boo.

Posted by sh3lly at November 3, 2008, 12:15 pm

Atari? That’s old school! You definitely have (had?) more consoles that I do (did?).

I wanna get a Fallout 3 too! I will not be able to get the Little Big Planet since I don’t own a PS3. This and MGS4 are the two games I’m upset about not being able to play. Why is a PS3 so expensive anyway? :(

I concur with everything you said about Final Fantasy 8. The love story didn’t click with me either: I cringed at the romancing at the outerspace scenes where Eyes On Me played (I think Eyes On Me is a good song mired by lyrics that make no sense). Part of the reason FF8 was such a hit was, of course, the graphics. Prior to that, no games ever displayed that kind of realism. Everyone hurled themselves over for that game awed by how preened-up it looked back then, nevermind that its story was of the same quality as a Beverly Hills episode. I didn’t mind the battle/weapon system that much, although I can understand why a lot of people hated it.

FF8 reminds me of beauty pageants.

Personally, I prefer a fun but ugly game than an un-fun but beautiful game. It’s why to this day, I often go back to play NES and SNES games. I haven’t touched my FF8 since I finished it nearly ten years ago.

Posted by nightdreamer at November 3, 2008, 12:44 pm

Yeah, man, I was a gamer all my life haha!

I believe a PS3 is much cheaper now, especially if you buy the PAL version. But you’ll have to make sure that you have a multi-system TV or else the games will be B&W. Either that, or get an HD monitor :p How much is an Xbox360 nowadays anyway? And have you been a victim of the 3RLs of doom?

Ah yeah, the FF8 graphics were really pretty, the people were gorgeous…it was all looks and no substance. I’ve ended it a long time ago and a few months back I wanted to play it again to see if I’ll enjoy it but, well, I didn’t. I stopped playing halfway through the first part.

Posted by sh3lly at November 3, 2008, 1:01 pm

Ha, I’m just the same way. Been a gamer all my life too. You never owned a PS2? Nor a Gamecube and Xbox?

You live in the Philippines, right? I got my X360 a year ago, it costs Php 16000 then. Wii costs much more than that, which is funny, because in US Wii is nearly half X360’s price. I’ve yet to get the 3RLs of doom, thankfully. I never have my X360 on for more than two hours. I always let it rest after that time.

Playing PS3 in black and white? Hah, sounds like a cool idea. Gives the games a retro vibe!

Oddly enough I found Final Fantasy 7 to be more replayable than FF8, despite all the blocky characters and their deadpan personalities. Still, I consider FF6 to be the pinnacle of the series, with FFX being the close second.

Posted by nightdreamer at November 3, 2008, 1:11 pm

Nope, didn’t get a PS2. I was too busy with moving to the Philippines and college at that time. So I pretty much skipped one generation and went from Playstation to PS3 *teehee!*. And I didn’t own a gamecube or xbox, I felt that my Playstation pretty much served me all my gaming needs :-)

Yep, I live in the Phils. So an xbox360 is really affordable huh? I just didn’t want to buy it because I didn’t want to spend my money on something that seemed…unstable, what with the 3RLs and all. But it’s cool that you haven’t encountered that.

Yeah my Elder Scrolls Oblivion game worked fine in my TV but when I played Call of Duty 4, it was black and white. It really gave it an old war movie vibe haha! I then eventually bought an HD monitor and woah, the graphics were pretty.

I’m biased, Final Fantasy 7 is my fave FF game because it was the first FF game I ever played :-p But yes, from what I’ve read online FF6 seems to be the ultimate FF out there. Haven’t played it though.

Here we are, geeking out on your blog (LOL!) I hope you don’t mind these long comments.

Posted by sh3lly at November 3, 2008, 1:26 pm

I actually love these long comments, and I like it more when we’re being geeky! Oftentimes I just, “nice blog tnx!” My geek needs are often not sated.

You didn’t grow up in Philippines then? What country were you from?

Playstation 2 is still worth getting (that’s assuming your PS3 is not backwards compatible; I read that some aren’t) because even the games released this year, few as they may be, are quite good. Yakuza 2, Persona 3 and I imagine Persona 4 are just some notables. I’m more immersed with Persona 3 than with Final Fantasy 7, for one. The artwork of that game is wicked cool!

You can skip Gamecube and Xbox, but PS2 is still worth it. Somehow it just refuses to die.

Some stages in Call of Duty 4 were in black and white. It’s funny you played it with the old movie vibe, because I thought the game tried to achieve that look! Haha! I like that game a lot, and considering I don’t even play first-person shooters too much (and I didn’t like Halo 3).

I can understand loving Final Fantasy 7 for it being the first game that got most people into RPG, and that’s all the more reason I encourage them to check out some RPG’s in SNES, because a lot of them are incredible. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4, 5, and 6, Terranigma, and Breath of Fire are some examples. And then there are the PSOne Rpg’s too: Suikoden 1 and 2 (esp. 2), Valkyrie Profile, and Grandia. Yes, I understand that FF7 is a great game; revolutionary, even. But I hear of too many singing praises of it being the best game ever, I just couldn’t grasp that, because I’ve seen earlier games of its kind achieve so much more than FF7, and seeing them not being acknowledged kind of upsets me. That’s just how geeky I can be! ^_^

Posted by nightdreamer at November 3, 2008, 1:48 pm

Haha! Great! ^_^

I was born in Indonesia. Lived there my whole life then moved here for college :)

My Playstation 3 is backwards compatible but since its the PAL version, it could only play PAL PS2 games. I never thought about buying PS2 games for my PS3, actually. Is it hard to find PAL PS2 games?

Ooh I love Valkyrie Profile! I didn’t end it though, I went real far in the game and I think I got stuck somewhere but it was really fun. And I love the artwork! I also had Suikoden 1 and 2 :D Yeah, Persona has awesome art, my coworker has the artbook of one of the Persona games and the designs are out of this world.

I haven’t played RPGs on the SNES. My very first RPG I ever played was (dramatic pause) “Beyond the Beyond” for the Playstation. Go read reviews of that on the Net and point and laugh at me. It was horrible! Then in came Final Fantasy 7 and that’s what changed my outlook on RPGs forever :D Wouldn’t say it’s the best game ever, just one of my many favorites.

Other RPGs I’ve played were Legend of the Dragoon, Front Mission 3, FF Tactics, Xenogears, Tales of Destiny, Vandal Hearts (

:| Hmm. Sorry for spamming your comments section, feel free to delete the comments that got cut off halfway.

Here we go again:

Other RPGs I’ve played were Legend of the Dragoon, Front Mission 3, FF Tactics, Xenogears, Tales of Destiny, Vandal Hearts, etc. Oh! And I loved Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap on the Gameboy Advanced (which I played on the DS).

Lets hope THAT goes through! XD

Posted by sh3lly at November 3, 2008, 2:17 pm

Well hello. I hope you like this country!

It’s not easy to find PAL games, but if you’re fine with downloading then you can download torrents of PS2 games in PAL, and then get it burned on DVD. It’s not hard to find online.

Some PS2 games I have can be played both on PAL and NTSC. Resident Evil 4 is an example.

Oddly enough you’re not the first person I’ve met whose first RPG is Beyond the Beyond. I’ve not heard of a single good comment about it.

Valkyrie Profile has some mindbending puzzles near the end of the game, and I couldn’t have finished it and seen the real ending without consulting a FAQ. That, and the steep learning curve, were my main gripes of the game. I love the art style very much and in fact I used its artwork as my wallpaper few years ago.

I’ve played all those games you’ve listed except the first Vandal Hearts, which is my regrettable omission. Those are great choices - of them all I like FF Tactics the best. Did you play the PSP remake? I heard that the script has been redone.

The Minish Cap (that went through!) is also a great game. I like it a lot more than Phantom Hourglass.

Posted by nightdreamer at November 3, 2008, 2:28 pm

It’s a crazy place to live in but yeah, it’s my new home and I love it :D Oh, I’m 100% pinay, by the way. My tagalog isn’t great, even though I’ve lived here since 2002. Apparently I still have that “accent” when I speak tagalog. Doesn’t stop me from trying though :p

Oh there’s a catch with the backwards compatibility thing on a PS3. It has to be an original PS2 game for it to work, so pirated games won’t cut it :(

Haha! Glad to know that I’m not the only one who played Beyond the Beyond as my first RPG.

Vandal Hearts was a really cool game. It’s one of my fave turn-based strategy RPG games out there, much better than it’s sequel which I felt was very redundant (it was always “Defeat all the enemies!” and didn’t have much variety in the goals per mission).

Haven’t played Phantom Hourglass. The thing about some DS games is that they tend to get a bit too, uh, “gimmicky” for my taste. But it all depends on how they manage to pull it off, of course.

I have the PSP remake of FF tactics but I didn’t get to go far because I think I got distracted with my PS3 games ^_^;

Posted by sh3lly at November 3, 2008, 2:45 pm

The accent thing is inevitable. Personally I like hearing foreign-sounding Tagalog a lot more than hearing pinoys trying to sound Yankee with their call-center English.

Data Blitz might have some PS2 games that are for NTSC. Perhaps it’s in the label. Not sure, though, as I’ve never bought PS2 games there (shh!).

That’s what I hear about the 2nd Vandal Hearts too. I’ve played it for a while and got bored with it. The artwork is ugly, as though it were done by some grade-schooler trying to achieve the Renaissance-painting look! If I ever get a PSP I’ll no doubt emulate the first Vandal Hearts.

You’re on the mark with the gimmicky comment. Phantom Hourglass felt like that. You can’t even play the game with the D-pad! You have to use stylus all the time! The only DS games that I thought did the stylus thingy well are Trauma Center, Elite Beat Agents, Pac Pix, Kirby Canvas Curve, Brain Age, and Big Brain Academy. It’s worth noting that all these games came out early in during DS’s life cycle.

Posted by nightdreamer at November 3, 2008, 2:59 pm

I sometimes get mistaken for a call center agent but I have a genuine English-speaking accent! Sob! Not that I have anything against call center agents but you know what I mean…

Yeah the 2nd Vandal Hearts had gosh awful art! I prefer the cartoony style of the original.

Trauma Center and Elite Beat Agents are ace DS games! But yeah, most of the DS games are too gimmicky. Like the Guitar Hero DS game. I think I read somewhere that they threw in mini games that require you to blow out flames? 0__0 I mean come on! I just wanna play guitar! LOL!

Dude, I’m adding you to my blog roll ok? :D

Posted by sh3lly at November 3, 2008, 9:32 pm

Did you manage to beat Trauma Center? The later stages are crazy! I like Elite Beat Agents but I prefer the songs of its import copy (which is called Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!).

BLOW OUT FLAMES?! THAT’S CLASS-A LAMENESS!

Sure. I already added you to my blog roll this morning, incidentally. I just like your art too much!

Posted by nightdreamer at November 3, 2008, 10:11 pm

Nah, I didn’t end it. Got too difficult later on, as you said, so I just gave up and played other games :p

Ooh yeah I heard about the original Jap version of that! You play male cheerleaders right?

Posted by sh3lly at November 4, 2008, 2:44 pm

I still haven’t given up in trauma center. I’m determined to finish it someday. Hahaha. There was one mission with a very absurd goal: I was supposed to operate 5 patients within 10 minutes! SICK!

Yep, in Osu you play cheerleaders. Isn’t that the same in Elite Beat Agents?

Posted by nightdreamer at November 4, 2008, 3:02 pm

Imagine if they did that in real life just for kicks. “Dr. Brown! We have 5 patients that need your attention but you have only 10 minutes to save them!”

“10 #$%## MINUTES?!”

“Timer starts…now!” *click*

Well, I wouldn’t exactly call the guys in Elite Beat “cheerleaders” per se. More like…”life coaches”. LOL! Kidding. I mean male cheerleaders are more of a Japanese thing anyway which is why in the American version they called them “agents”. But, meh, technicalities :-p
