I was glued to the internet all morning watching the live updates of the tallies. It was a Wednesday morning here in the Philippines, and at around 9:30 AM I was dead-certain that Obama will be the next U.S. president.

 

Being the only person in the office who followed the campaigns, I announced the result forcefully, “Obama is gonna win!”

 

My coworker gave a curious reply, “Really? America will take a turn for the worse then.”

I paused uneasily, and then wondered aloud what he meant. He said, “That country can now be governed by a black man. It means Negroes will be freer to roam the streets to do their thugs stuff.”

I was not in the mood to debate with anyone, so without challenging him I let him had his hateful speculations. Even if I couldn’t blame him for being ignorant, those comments did not sit well with me. My brother, also living in the Philippines, had been in a similar position few months ago when he and his coworkers watched the trailers of Resident Evil 5. While my brother found the images of a white hero shooting black zombies in Africa distasteful, his coworker commented, “Well there are many black terrorists anyway.”

Here’s a background of how black people are regarded here in the Philippines, a country that worships America and will follow it to the ends of the earth. Our country cannot be blamed for being a big fan of America because when Americans ruled our land many years ago, they gave us, among other things, industrial and economic developments. Above all, they earned favorable opinions from us because on July 4, 1946, they allowed us to be an independent nation.

The year is 1946. This was before Americans had the civil rights act. Racial divide was rampant at their side. From this, we can conclude that Americans did not educate Filipinos properly about what black people were like, because even Americans themselves couldn’t see black people for who they were individually. Although blacks, Negritos specifically, were the first to populate our country hundreds of years ago, they had long become a minority here, being settled in our most isolated and undeveloped regions. The average Filipinos did not congregate with blacks too much, so we did not know them too well.

To this day it is not very common for us to see blacks. Most of our immigrants are Chinese, Hispanics, Caucasians, and Koreans. Most of us only see black people through movies, or if live then only through local basketball leagues where they play as imports. Many of us don’t even know who Martin Luther King, Jr. is.

Until now, the media have never been known to represent blacks favorably. Often in Hollywood movies, black people were paid to play the throwaway loud and comic roles, while the whites are the heroes saving the world (see: Transformers). Meanwhile, in hiphop music videos, we don’t see black men conduct themselves in the cleanest ways because we see them glorifying life of hookers, blingblings, and gangbangings. It doesn’t help that the contents of their lyrics are on the explicit side.

To be sure, the media are to be faulted for their propensity to portray blacks in negative lights. Do they sing praises to civil rights activists as much as they would criticize gangster rappers? Do they commend Toni Morrison’s literary achievements as often as they would condemn OJ Simpson’s crimes? Even the black people’s songs they play are selective: instead of choosing the heaps of intelligent raps, soul and rnb music that dominate the underground scenes, it’s the Souljah Boyz’s who get all the airtime, ululating “ho” so that holier-than-thou soccer moms can slam Biblical wisdoms onto them. There’s something to be said about music industries being too obsessed with images of badness and cockiness, yet how often does anyone condemn the white race when a band of white guys acts like punks?

Indeed certain blacks, just like certain people of other ethnic groups, are up to no good. Indeed the ghetto life can be gruesome. Yet, rarely has any efforts to understand what made those happen ever reached public awareness. Furthermore, there has yet to be enough proof, 68 years later, that what happened Richard Wright’s Native Son does not happen anymore on modern times: when its black protagonist Bigger Thomas faced charges of murdering a white woman, white people treated the trial as the prosecution of the entire black community. And this is exactly what’s happening here: my coworker is unable to perceive black personalities as individuals, and instead judges the whole black race through media’s oblique expositions.

There still are long ways to go if racism is to be driven permanently out of existence, but electing Obama as president is the start for Americans. They showed the world that they are ready to make an African-American become the world’s most powerful man. If indeed change is gonna come is anyone’s guess, but just as it behooves Obama to make America more peaceful by cultivating it as a land that treats diverse groups fairly, it behooves us all – including the rest of the world - to remove our ignorance.

It never fails to surprise me at how narrow-minded people can get and I not only blame the media but the education system. No offense or anything, but since I moved to this country, I’ve found that majority of the people here are very…well, racist. They make fun of indians, blacks, and hell, even white people. People even made fun of my English accent (these were the days before call centers were popular, heh). Maybe it affects and offends me so much because I grew up in an environment with people of different races and were friends with Indians, Chinese, etc. Schools here should at least teach about racial tolerance.

I, for one, am ecstatic that Obama won. I would’ve voted for him myself if I was an American citizen.

Actually, I’m not a Pinoy. My father and mother are both immigrants from Taiwan, and I grew up here. The reason I feel so strongly about issues of racial intolerance is because I’ve been subjected to it myself (which I may elaborate at a future time). My aunts and uncles, all living in Taiwan, do not have high opinions of our family because we’re “too Filipino”, whereas they’re very ingratiating to my cousins (who are not their sons) because my cousins are raised in New Zealand. My cousins are more white, according to them.

The funny thing is that my cousins still haven’t finished college (and they don’t seem likely to, because they keep dropping), unlike me and my siblings.

Here in the Philippines I’ve also been made fun of many times because of my ethnicity, but it never becomes as hurtful as when my aunts and uncles do it.

I’m also happy that Obama won.

Well, I disagree that racism is THAT bad here in the Philippines. In fact, I find that most Filipinos have an inherent inferiority complex. Sure, they make jokes out of foreigners because of their inherent cultural difference (they say Indians stink, Chinese are mercenaries and, worse, the Japanese have small penises), but I don’t think these jokes match the racism inherent in other countries.

I think your co-worker and your brother’s are just stupid. LOL.

Your aunts’ racism is very familiar. In Japan, people of Japanese descent who grew up in foreign countries couldn’t fit in, no matter how hard they try.

I did not quantify how bad Philippines’ racism is, so I don’t know where you’re coming from when you’re disagreeing. :P

The thing is, I did not in any way say that my coworkers and my brother’s are racist. I said they were ignorant. They do not know of how black folks are treated by Americans, and why they are the way they are. The worst pinoys do to black people is laugh at them. I’ve never heard of pinoys lynching black people here.

If anything, the way Filipinos perceive other ethnicities is juvenile. They tag labels (like those you mentioned) because they are uninformed, and the reason they are uninformed is because of our irresponsible media. Plus they have to stop blanketing the characteristics of an entire race based on what they see on ONE person, which is what happened in Native Son, the novel I mentioned.

@J and nightdreamer: Well, I say that out of personal experience. The “majority” of people that I’ve met are probably not the same “majority” of people that you’ve met yourself.

I consider making fun of other people’s skin color/smell/culture racist whether it may be “juvenile” or not. Verbal threats and insults regarding a person’s race all fall under the umbrella of racism after all.

Still, to be fair to Filipinos, I was subjected to racial prejudices a lot more back when I was in grade school than now. At least I don’t quite as often hear of “intsik ching-chong” jokes now as I did before.

I also think one of the Alaska commercials where there’s this black guy fumbling in a basketball game while the white kid totally owns him, is a big time stink.

I don’t know but I think those petty comments/jokes on the cultural difference of other people happen everywhere. And correct me if I’m wrong on this, but friends told me racism in Indonesia against the Chinese is a serious matter.

But come to think of it, it’s hypocritical for Pinoys to cry over that skit about a Filipina maid on BBC when we always make fun of Indians and Chinese in our gag shows.

@J: Yep, I was in Indonesia when the atrocities against the Chinese happened. Scary times, especially since my dad looks Chinese.

I just don’t tolerate racism of any shape or form is all I’m saying. And the reason why I said majority of the people in the Philippines are racist is because, as I said in my previous post, I’m accustomed to being around people of different ethnicities and races. I studied in an international school in Indonesia until I moved here to the Philippines and this is where I had a culture shock. Instead of being surrounded by different nationalities everyday, I was surrounded by pinoys who blatantly threw insults at people who were not of their kind. So I hope you understand how I must’ve felt since I had alot of good friends who were Indians, etc. and the people’s ignorance angered me (yes, I am empathetic to a fault).

And actually yes, I was going to point out that hypocrisy of our people. It’s silly, really :-p

I have no way to actually quantify how many people here are actually racist, but as I’ve said, I only speak from personal experience and that was my experience on that matter.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Shelly. :) I’ve spent a portion of my life living near the squatter areas, and racial biases at such places can get out of hand at times.

Hypocrisy is really what’s holding a society from being more mature. If we’re going to whine about Desperate Housewives’ racial slurs, then how about we stop doing these to Chinese too?

I’m also finding it amusing how everyone who has commented here has either spent a lot of their lives being overseas, or are not Filipino citizens.

@nightdreamer: Yeah, that IS an interesting observation. I suppose the issue of race is not really that much of a concern to people who just live in their mother countries all their lives. They seem to only take it into account when:

a) They poke fun at people who are not of their race. (”Haha! Look! An indian! Better hold your breath!”)

b) When their own race is being poked fun at. (”How DARE they make fun of the quality of our med schools!”)

In many cases history is written by those who manipulate.
