Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations (A Restrospective)

I played Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice for All (part 2 of the series) immediately after I was done with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (part 1). A year has passed between those two games’ release. You can’t say that I was the type who was dying in anticipation to play the first game, because if I was, I would’ve bought it immediately either on the day of its release or on the day I got a DS (six months later).

After two games, after getting through 9 cases, after continuously watching courtroom antics that has no semblance to real life (the senate hearings of the Philippines come close though), I would’ve been worn out.

Yet, despite myself, I went to Ace Attorney (AA) fansites. It’s probably not the wisest decision I’ve made, since I was trying to lower my obsession, at least until my interests have waned enough that I would stop raving about AA to every person I meet. I thought, hey, I was just visiting for curiosity! Maybe if I overstuffed my brain with AA related info, I would tire of it!

So what did I find? A fan has translated the first case of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations (AA3) into English. I still had this delusion of fortitude, and I defied myself to download and play through that case so as to affirm that I am, in fact, ready to take a break from the series.

The extent that I would punish myself to prove my point.

  

Let’s just say that that experiment of my fortitude was an utter failure. It all went kaput as I saw the first case unfold. Worse, I was furious that it was the only translated portion. Just like that, I’m back to neglecting my real life duties again, playing through AA1 and 2 repeatedly while feverishly awaiting the game’s release and going to court-records.net regularly and F5-ing unhealthy amount of times.

That first case, nothing could have prepared me for it.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. The first cases of both AA1 and 2 are throwaways, which Phoenix Wright cracks with relative ease. That’s fine, because they function as an in-game tutorial; it’s just that they get dwarfed and even forgotten once you proceed with the rest of the game. AA3’s first case also serves to instruct newcomers, with one noticeable difference for veterans:

Phoenix Wright - younger, more excitable, and wearing a garish pink outfit - is at a witness stand pleading innocence. Defending his case is Mia Fey, who then is a rookie lawyer.

As you may have guessed, this all happens in the past, chronologically 4 or 5 years before the events of AA1. It should be pretty obvious then that Phoenix Wright will be acquitted – how else do you get to play as him in this and the earlier games? - which takes away some of the suspense. But if you’re at all invested in his character, you’ll want to know how the case affects him. How will it change him? What kind of emotional scars will it bring him?

Pretty damn effective way to hook the player.

Concluding the trilogy of Ace Attorney games starring Phoenix Wright as the protagonist, AA3 ties the past to the present. It does this by having the first case introduce another major character, Dahlia Hawthorne, who is revealed to be Phoenix Wright’s girlfriend. The game constantly revisits her conflict with Mia Fey, and, without going to spoilers, let’s just say that her demure appearance is only for show.

There’s a challenger, ahem, prosecutor, thus antagonist, who wears a goofy looking visor to cover his unknown identity. He goes by the alias of Godot, and claims to have no records as a lawyer even if he seems to know how its procedures work. Though he would appear non-threatening and more of an eccentric who loves to interject his speech with coffeehouse philosophical quotes (and drinks 17 cups of coffee a day!), he loathes Phoenix Wright, for reasons that elude Phoenix. And I’m not talking about Franziska von Karma sort of grudge, which, at worst, is petty and more of intended for gaining cred. I’m talking about deep-seated hatred, the sort that genuinely wants the foe to suffer just to revel on it.

Anyway, I should tell you now that though I may give you the impression of AA3 being a progressive entry of the series, it isn’t. At its core, it’s still an AA game… which, yeah, unlike its predecessors, happen to have multiple flashbacks. But the pattern remains the same. There’s not a feature here that you haven’t seen before. Cases are still so complicated that they make you wonder if every AA murderer is a brainstorming expert who eats The Incredible Machine for breakfast. No DS exclusive cases either, although there are 5 cases this time.

Back when I just played this game I was so caught up in the moment to the point of not respecting any criticisms against it. I liked how it wrapped up the trilogy by connecting the present with the past, which makes the cases more consequential. Unfortunately, AA3, more than the earlier games, has the same flaws as one of what the io9 crew categorized as two kinds of dumb movies (in their review of that banal Wolverine movie): a. the kind where you don’t notice the holes until it’s midnight and you’re raiding a fridge, disappointed to find that there’s no corpse stuffed in it, and b. the kind you can’t concentrate because try as Michael Bay might to boom your eardrums into dysfunction, you’re too busy saying “what the hell?!” over and over and over again. AA3 requires sound thinking (or FAQs) to beat and isn’t stupid, but it’s the former. Other games that fit category a? Final Fantasy VII, Kingdom Hearts, Halo, GTA3, and your high school crush. They all hold up terribly under scrutiny.

But all right, the merits of AA3. Every encounter with Godot is memorable. AA has been praised for its humorous writing, but AA3 tops it all thanks to Godot’s insane, pulpy metaphors, some of them very quote-worthy (Blacker than a moonless night, hotter and more bitter than hell itself… that is coffee.). Of all the characters in the series, including the sequels, he has the best dialogue, and it’s so easy to be fazed into liking him even if you’re supposed to oppose him and, especially, even if his backstory and motivations don’t make a lot of sense. The good thing about this is that the courtroom scenes never bore when he’s around.

The drama… here’s a warning: if you are emotionally connected to any of the past characters, be prepared to lose sleep over this game once you get past case 3 – and cases 4 and 5 combined are as long as 1, 2, and 3 combined, and will wear you out. Don’t miss this game if you’ve grown to like the Ace Attorney cast, because you will miss their character growths.

Where the game falters though is the leap of logic required from the player. There’s too much complexities with the murders, too much stuff to digest about spirit channeling, and too much personal familial drama. The last one has a potential of ruining the game: if you try to write down every characters and draw a line to indicate connection, you’ll get something that resembles the “artwork” of a baby’s first encounter with a pen and paper.

None of these bothers me much. What’s bothersome to me is that AA3 is to blame for the direction the series has since taken. It’s becoming apparent that the mystery, while still relatively rich in AA3, is taking a backseat over the drama. Also, I can only suspend my disbelief so much. The occult elements of the plot I can take. At worst, this game concludes them anyway. I can’t, however, take the absurd sci-fi AA3 has introduced. It all goes back to Godot. I can’t tell you why he wears this Cyclops visor without going into spoilers, but I can tell you that it involves some weird technology. AA3 doesn’t go overboard with the sci fi yet, since it’s inhibited compared to the next Ace Attorney games. But man, overall, the sci fi of AA series sucks so bad it’s like watching those infomercial products with functions too good to be real and of any practical use.

I’ll have more to say on the sci fi by the next few posts. Oh, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, a.k.a. AA4. Do I have a lot to say about that.
